It's not that the press can't win - it's that the press has to act like the press and do a bit of actual research, or it will wind up parroting what someone else claims, without testing and verifying, and thus play into old schemes perpetrated using new tools.
A 'shallow' press amplifies the work of price fixers - making it easier for them to get away with their schemes. Indeed, the press had to become professional because price fixers (and worse) exploited it for decades, and only smart, skeptical journalists could see through BS.
