Migrants of Martha’s Vineyard
Do not be deceived by what you have seen so far
We love America, we love her Statue of Liberty
We love the huddled masses, yearning to breathe free
Some shipped them to our vineyards, or places far away
Some told lies of jobs, then dumped them on a plane
Some parade how well they live a Christian duty
No matter what the facts or media say.
Sing songs of love for America!
God save thee from false friends —
May we care humbly for those in need
And somehow make amends.
Florida is better than Governor Ron DeSantis. Texas is better than Governor Greg Abbott. America is better than scoundrels and bullies who use other people as objects to score political points, knowing that as they do it, the words spewed by friends will cast them as heroes, and by foes will be ignored. There have always been such scoundrels and bullies. Sometimes, they prevail for a long time. But America is only America because sometimes, we can overcome them.
May a better poet than I capture the fury we should all feel at the nasty stunts DeSantis and Abbott have perpetrated to migrants this month.
